I was contacted by ‘Chris’ a couple of days ago advising that TrafficCamNZ Desktop for Mac was crashing on startup for him. Suspecting a data corruption issue I got Chris to send me the data files for the application so that I could diagnose the fault and develop a fix. I found the fault in the application and fixed it, though it has not yet been submitted to Apple for approval and distribution. So the next release of TrafficCamNZ Desktop for Mac will have the following fixes incorporated into version 1.1.3 when released:

  • Fixes a crash on the camera edit screen when the user tries to save or cancel or delete and the image has not finished retrieving
  • Fixed an issue where the main window contents could dissapear when a cmd-w was sent
  • A menu is dynamically added when the Bulk Camera Functions screen is displayed. This menu is for loading the Tennessee XML camera file and is intended for use when maintaining the camera data file. The menu is removed when the window is closed.
  • Fixed an issue where duplicate camera entries could cause a crash while trying to display their images on the main screen

I cannot advise at this time when I will be able to make the submission to Apple of the new version.

I advised ‘Chris’ that he could start again with TarfficCamNZ by removing the following directory as a temporary work around:

/Users/<your user code>/Library/containers/nz.co.catch22.TrafficCamNZ

this is the same directory that I asked ‘Chris” to zip up and send to me for fault diagnosis.

TrafficCamNZ – Updates 30 October 2011

Both the iPhone/iPad and desktop versions of TrafficCamNZ have received some updates.

TrafficCamNZ (iPhone/iPad) – version 1.6.10 brings the following updates and new features
* Images are displayed on an extenal screen if one is connected – With an iPhone 4S, or iPad 2 when using video mirroring via AirPlay – images are displayed full screen on secondary screen (i.e. via AppleTV on your TV)
* Bringing up the map screen will now make use of your location – much more useful – previously the initial position would be Apple
* Updates the default camera list – previously blank cameras would be loaded
* Addresses an issue where blank cameras were loaded from the default camera list – these blank cameras are automatically deleted

About the AirPlay support – it’s really neat! I’ve wanted to do this for some time and it’s turned out really well. So If you have a device that supports Video Mirroring (iPhone 4S or iPad 2) you can access this feature. When the application runs it detects the “mirrored screen” or external display. The featured or shown images are displayed on this screen as well as on the device (iPhone or iPad) itself. The one downside is that you can’t use video mirroring to display the application itself.

A mentioned above I also found an issue with the supplied default data file. Some of the cameras didn’t load and this resulted in lots of duplicate blank cameras – it would look a bit wonky to first time users when scrolling through the Library of cameras. I’ve fixed this issue and also at application launch the Library of cameras is scanned for blank cameras and these are automatically deleted.

TrafficCamNZ Desktop – version 1.1.2 beings the following updates
* Fixed a crash when deleting multiple entries from the camera list screen
* Text overlaid on images is resized to fit if it is too big
* Fixed a crash if no images available for display

The updates have been submitted to Apple for approval prior to release.

Remember if you have camera updates for your area, or a whole lot more cameras that you have loaded get them to me so that I can update the main data file for everyone.

TrafficCamNZ – new update soon 8 April 2010

With the most recent release of TrafficCamNZ there were some significant new features based on your location and the location of cameras around you. There are now three modes of operating:

Mode 1.
Standard – will display images that you have pre-selected to be your favourite images

Mode 2.
Auto detect cameras – this uses location services on your device to determine your current location and selects the cameras to display depending on how far they are away from you. The preference setting lets you alter the detection range. Images are displayed in this mode regardless of the favourite setting you have set on the individual camera.

Mode 3.
Predictive – this mode is experimental, though feel free to try it out. It is designed to display cameras based on your direction of travel, how far ahead (in minutes) you want to view, your current speed and an angle of view. Imagine you are traveling in a car or bus or truck. The angle of view might be set to 60 degrees. Based on this the program will look forward of this position (30 degrees either side of an imaginary center line) and look for cameras that are within range. Direction and speed details used are based on a number of samples that you can set and are averaged. Phew, that’s a bit of a quick trip! I might have to draw a picture for this. [update – a picture!]

Since the release (version 1.5.0) I have found a couple of issues. If you are getting some unexpected behaviour, make sure that mode 2 and mode 3 (autodetect and predictive) are NOT both set to on. The new version will prevent this. Some more details of changes come though are below. This version is still in development and has not yet been submitted for approval.

1.5.2 Fixed an issue on startup when trying to autodetect cameras around our location
1.5.2 The refresh button/icon on the single camera image view has been updated. It is also disabled when an image is being refreshed
1.5.2 Enhanced preference settings to that Auto detect and Predictive mode can not be selected at the same time
1.5.2 Altered the behaviour of the Map view to reduce the number of pins added to the map to help improve performance

TrafficCamNZ – Massive Camera update 28 February 2010

With special thanks to a US resident, I’m pleased to release a camera file update for TrafficCamNZ. This update adds over 2000 new cameras for the USA with Las Vegas Nevada and a small area in Florida getting GPS positions for their cameras. You can force the update from the preferences screen by pressing the “XML Merge” button.

Now when you look on the Map screen you will seen pins on the USA map for those locations that have cameras with GPS positions. For those cameras that don’t have a GPS location associated with them, you can access them from the Library screen. Now with there being so many USA cameras, I recommend you use the search feature to find the cameras you want or you will spend for ever scrolling through the list.

Did you know that if you tap on a pin hitting the right disclosure triangle will show you the image for that camera on the next screen. If you tap on the thumbnail of the image (on the left hand side) you can set if you would like that camera to be a favourite and appear on the main screen when it is refreshed.

Some of the screens that appear above are from my development release version of the application. You may have spotted some of the new features coming, including the ability to auto refresh the main screen every 1, 2, or 3 minutes. And I’ve had some really neat suggestions regarding GPS positioning and screen refresh, they’re next on the development list.

The tricky thing now is managing the more than 5000 cameras in the main data file. I’m looking into writing some utility software that will allow me to manage this better. I also have more camera URL’s, I’m testing these first before release. At this stage I have almost 1000 more URL’s for release, however they are not working for me as the web sites are preventing an easy download.

You’ll also be please to know there is a new release of the TrafficCamNZ software under development that includes support for a larger screen, this is very exciting and looks amazing. More on this at later time.

TrafficCamNZ – Latest updates – V 1.3.2 31 January 2010

Version 1.3.2 of TrafficCamNZ has been submitted to the Apple App Store for approval and release. This release contains an important fix and more new enhancements:

1.3.2 Preferences screen altered to display the total number of cameras loaded
1.3.2 Help screen altered to display the application version
1.3.2 Added ability to drag and drop cameras (in order to move and position them) in the mapview.
1.3.2 Added check for non blank data before sending an e-mail (no point otherwise).
1.3.2 Fixed a crash that might occur on the All Images tab if the Camera URL was blank
1.3.2 Fixed an issue with URL escape sequences – this prevented some images from displaying

The important fix was required to deal with URL’s that contain escape sequences, i.e. %20 where this represents a space character. These were not being correctly handled and thus the image would not be displayed. Ironically this problem does not occur in the free version of the application. Also due to the keyboard that is displayed when entering a URL, you cannot actually key a space character.

The big change is to the Map tab. You can now add cameras on the Map tab, and pick up and move the camera pins around as well to accurately position them. Also if you now tap on the picture that is shown when the pin is selected you are asked if you would like this camera to be made favorite so that it is shown on the main window. See the screen snapshot below.

And if liv in New York and don’t have the latest data file loaded, do to the info screen (main start screen and tap the i in the top right) and choose XML Merge. This will get the latest set of camera updates which include a whole bunch of New York cameras with GPS coordinates. These show up on the Map as shown in the screen snapshot below.

TrafficCamNZ – New features coming soon 28 December 2009

I was inspired recently when I received a very encouraging e-mail from Chris. His e-mail has already resulted in a new release (out now) that allows you to assign a TAG number to images so that they can be sequenced on the main viewing screen. The next suggested feature involves GPS tagging every camera – this is a big job.

First off the enhancements to TrafficCamNZ are to show the captured GPS locations and Cameras on a map screen, and to show these locations in relation to you and provide zoom in/out abilities. That looks like the screen capture below. By tapping one of the pins the software tells you what camera this pin is. Then by tapping on the “disclosure triangle” you get a full screen image of that camera:

Next step is to provide an ability to capture the data, so the camera data entry screen has been altered to allow for the manual entry of Latitude and Longitude coordinates. This can be somewhat tedious for data entry, so I’ve also modified the bulk data import routines to allow for bulk update by me to all users. To facilitate easy coordinate capture I have also added an ability to “use this location” – as the location data is being obtained the coordinates are shown in red, then as the samples improve they turn black and the GPS locator shuts down (to conservce battery). So if you are standing next to a known traffic camera, you can capture the current location for that camera (no data entry required). I’m now thinking I’ll add in an ability for you to e-mail these updates to me as there appears to be no known reference database for traffic cameras and GPS coordinates (unless they are related to speed cameras!).

This screen will scroll up (when I get that working). At the moment by touching the button (where the image is shown in the screenshot) it will got and test the retrieval of the image. Tap that image and it will show it to you in full screen.

This version is still in development and not yet submitted to Apple.

Approved this week was a new version of TrafficCamNZ. This version allows you to “tag” a camera with a number (any number). Then as images are presented on the main screen, they are presented in your numbering order. If an image has not been given a number, then the program automatically assigns one starting from 100.

I’m also pleased to announce that I have been working on presenting a map view of cameras that shows where the cameras are. Pins are put onto the map to show camera locations and as the map is presented it zooms into your location (if the GPS on your iPhone is enabled). While this version is still in development progress is very good and I hope to submit this version to Apple in January 2010.

I need your help. Obtaining the GPS locations for the cameras I already have (or new ones for that matter) is somewhat if a challenge. If you are able to help with the locations of cameras in your area, please post a comment to this message. I already have Auckland (NZ), I can make a very educated guess at the Wellington (NZ) cameras.

Hope to hear from you soon.

I would like to add more image URL’s to my iPhone application TrafficCamNZ. It can be quite a task searching the web for new URL’s and their descriptions. So I thought I’d start off taking an easy approach. If you have any URL’s and associated camera descriptions can you please post them here or e-mail me directly and I’ll work on building a new release of the XML file that contains all of the camera.

I have this evening been working on some changes to the New Zealand cameras. The people that host these cameras have made changes recently breaking previous URL’s. I need to test these changes a bit more but there will be a camera XML file update shortly.

These URL’s are valid.

An updated version of TarfficCamNZ has been submitted to the iPhone application store for approval. This new release adds new features and some bug fixes to stop potential application crashes.

  • Fixed potential memory leaks with image handling
  • Found and fixed an issue in iPhone OS 3.0 where some uninitialised fields would cause an Application crash when refreshing images (or starting the App). This may or may be not fixed as it seems to occur when restoring a 3.0 backup from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3GS. If you continue to have problems, you may been to delete the Application from the iPhone and let iTunes reinstall it when you sync.
  • New Feature: [you must have e-mail setup for this to work] Added to the Preferences screen the ability to e-mail an xml file of cameras to any e-mail address
  • New Feature: [you must have e-mail setup for this to work] The main screen now has an Action button (Top Left) – this will set up an email message for you containing the current traffic picture – add the destination e-mail address and tap send. The camera URL is included in the e-mail so that those receiving your message can refresh for themselves what you are looking at
  • Implemented a work around for an issue that could trigger an image receipt failure and success for the same image meaning the application would crash
